As the weather warms and we spend more time outdoors, so do ticks — and with them, the risk of Lyme disease.

May is officially Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and at Peak Health Institute, we’re committed to empowering you with accurate information, effective prevention strategies, and natural support that works.

Whether you’re hiking, gardening, or playing with your kids in the backyard, understanding the truth about tick bites and Lyme disease is more important than ever.

What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness caused primarily by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. It’s often transmitted by the black-legged tick (also known as the deer tick). If left untreated, Lyme can affect the nervous system, joints, heart, and cognitive function — sometimes for years.

Early detection is key, but there’s a lot of misinformation floating around. Let’s clear it up.

Common Myths About Lyme Disease

Myth #1: You’ll Always Get a Bullseye Rash

Only about 30–40% of people develop a classic erythema migrans (“bullseye”) rash. You can still have Lyme disease without any rash at all.

Myth #2: The Tick Has to Be Attached for 24+ Hours

Transmission can happen in as little as a few minutes to a few hours. Waiting 24 hours to react or “watch and wait” can be risky.

Myth #3: If You Feel Fine, You Don’t Need to Treat the Bite

Lyme disease can be asymptomatic for weeks. By the time symptoms show up (fatigue, brain fog, joint pain), the bacteria may have already spread.

How to Prevent Tick Bites

  • Wear light-colored clothing and tuck pants into socks on trails or wooded areas
  • Use natural tick repellents (like oil of lemon eucalyptus or permethrin-treated gear)
  • Check your body thoroughly after outdoor time — especially:
    • Behind the ears
    • Around the hairline
    • Under arms and knees
    • Along waistband and sock lines
  • Shower within 2 hours of being outdoors
  • Keep lawns trimmed and brush cleared in your yard

What To Do If You Get a Tick Bite

1. Remove the Tick Properly

  •  Use fine-tipped tweezers
  • Grasp tick near skin and pull upward firmly (don’t twist)
  • Don’t crush or burn it

2. Clean the Site

  • Use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide

3. Save the Tick

  • Place it in a ziplock bag with date and location
  • You can send it to labs like TickReport.com for testing

4. Watch for Symptoms

  • Rash, fever, fatigue, joint pain, brain fog
  • If a rash appears, seek treatment immediately — antibiotics are often warranted

5. Consider Early Intervention Herbs + Antimicrobials

  • Even while waiting for results or symptoms, early herbal support may help

Broad-spectrum herbal formula to disrupt biofilms, target pathogens, and support detox.

Astragalus Root

Immune-modulating herb ideal for early Lyme support (not used in chronic cases).

Ledum Palustre (Homeopathic 200C)

Often recommended immediately after a bite as part of an early intervention plan.

Liposomal Glutathione

Supports detox pathways, protects the brain, and eases Herxheimer (“die-off”) reactions.

Lyme and tick-borne illness often disrupt the gut. This program helps heal and rebuild the microbiome for long-term immune strength.
